Phoenix's Story

When Phoenix came to me, she was battling a severe upper respiratory infection. She was also covered in fleas. Flea anemia can be one of the most difficult obstacles for orphaned kittens to overcome. Phoenix's PCV value was 7% (it should be at least 25%). She was struggling to get enough oxygen, and required hospitalization, oxygen therapy, a blood transfusion and IV antibiotics in order to stabilize. With additional antibiotic and antiviral medication as well as eye drops, Phoenix is making an impressive recovery. She is now a fluff-ball of energy and loves to play and cuddle.

Foster Pro Tip: when intaking stray kittens, a bath with dish soap or medicated flea shampoo can often help kittens tremendously with overcoming flea anemia. Topical and oral flea control does not always kill all fleas, at least not right away. I always bathe my kittens to ensure that all fleas, dead or alive, are washed down the drain so my kitten can have a fair shot at replenishing a healthy blood supply.
